Chapter 1: Misdirection

Trust is the detective's most important resource and most significant vulnerability. Building trust with witnesses and suspects is what enables access to information that would otherwise be concealed. Being trusted by someone who is not trustworthy is what produces the most serious investigative errors. It was the kind of memory that softened with time but never disappeared. It was the sort of thing that took up more space in their mind than it seemed it should.

Witnesses are unreliable not because they are dishonest but because perception is fallible and memory is reconstructive. What a person reports they saw reflects not only what they observed but how they have made sense of it in the intervening time. Two honest witnesses to the same event will often give accounts that are difficult to reconcile. It was easy to miss, and it was impossible to forget. It was the sort of memory that returned without warning.

The document, the letter, the contract, the diary entry, tells you what someone chose to write, which is not the same as what was true. Documents can be fabricated, can be edited, can be selective in ways that are not apparent without comparison to other sources. The written record is evidence but it is not transparent evidence. It was the sort of detail that quietly changed everything. That small detail held more meaning than they could say.

What remains after an investigation is not simply the solution to the specific problem that prompted it. The investigation has changed the investigator, has added to their knowledge of how people behave under pressure, what they will do to protect themselves, what they reveal when they think no one is watching. The feeling of it lingered in the back of her mind. It was one of those moments that seemed simple until it was gone.

The case closed. The explanation that emerged was orderly, consistent with the evidence, and almost certainly correct. 'Almost certainly' is the most the evidence allows; it is more than is usually available. It was the sort of detail that quietly changed everything. It was one of those moments that seemed simple until it was gone.
