Chapter 1: First Suspicions

The document, the letter, the contract, the diary entry, tells you what someone chose to write, which is not the same as what was true. Documents can be fabricated, can be edited, can be selective in ways that are not apparent without comparison to other sources. The written record is evidence but it is not transparent evidence. It felt more important later, when they looked back on it from a different life. It was the sort of thing that took up more space in their mind than it seemed it should.

Pattern recognition is central to detective work, but patterns can be found where none exist. The human mind is very good at detecting patterns and not very good at distinguishing real patterns from coincidences. The detective who has identified a pattern must be willing to hold it lightly, to test it against what it would predict, to abandon it when the evidence requires. The feeling of it lingered in the back of her mind. It was one of those moments that seemed simple until it was gone.

What remains after an investigation is not simply the solution to the specific problem that prompted it. The investigation has changed the investigator, has added to their knowledge of how people behave under pressure, what they will do to protect themselves, what they reveal when they think no one is watching. For a moment, the ordinary felt profound. It was the sentence they would remember when the story was retold.

The record was filed. The events it described continued to exist, in memory and consequence, outside the record. This too is always so. This memory would return in another season. It became the kind of memory that softened around the edges but never vanished.
