Chapter 1: Living Systems
Evolution by natural selection is the central organising principle of modern biology, but its implications are still being worked out. Every feature of every organism, anatomical, physiological, behavioural, cognitive, can in principle be examined in light of its evolutionary history, and this examination never quite exhausts what the feature is or does. It stayed with them long after the day had ended. It was the sort of memory that returned without warning.
Quantum mechanics describes a world that is irreducibly probabilistic. This is not a limitation of our current theories, something that a better theory might overcome. It is a fundamental feature of nature, confirmed by experiments of extraordinary precision. The world at its most basic level does not have a single definite state until it is observed. It was one of those small things that ended up defining the story. It felt as if the day had changed in response.
The scientific method is not a single procedure but a family of practices adapted to different kinds of questions. What unites them is commitment to evidence, to the principle that claims about the world must be answerable, at least in principle, to observation. This commitment distinguishes science not from art or philosophy, which have their own standards of rigour, but from belief that claims exemption from evidence. They remembered it not for what happened but for how it felt. It was one of those moments that seemed simple until it was gone.
This is where the current understanding stands. What the next generation will understand, built on these foundations, is not yet knowable. This is not a limitation of science; it is its nature. The meaning of it unraveled slowly, like a thread in a drawer. It was the kind of thing that stayed with them without asking for attention.
